With the introduction of 3D games, a new dimension opened up i.e. up and down. The introduction of 3D games not only increased the requirement of graphics but also put a new problem in front of us i.e. how to use free look efficiently.
Before the introduction of WASD gaming, every player has their own way of using the controls some used Arrow keys for movement some used mouse and arrow keys. There was an infinite number of combinations used by every player so let’s see how this settle down to WASD worldwide. We will also talk about some WASD shooting games that are currently topping the charts of active users, across the world.
The best and most popular WASD shooting game is Counter-Strike: Global Offensive while writing this post there were 5.5 million players who play CS GO frequently across the world. This number is enough to show the popularity of this WASD shooting game.
There are many other games that are quite popular but not as popular as Fortnite. They still receive a good number of players on daily basis, hence we have listed them in the post further. We will also include some offline WASD shooting games which are popular in the gaming community.
9 Best WASD Shooting Game List
- Apex Legends
- Counter-Strike Global Offensive
- PUBG PC
- Half-Life 2
- Call of Duty Series
- Titanfall 2
- Rainbow Six Siege
We will talk about the above-mentioned WASD shooting games in detail, but if you want to know the story behind finalizing WASD as a gaming standard then skip to the last of the post.
Player Base (Daily Average)
I prepared a donut chart showing the estimated player base of each WASD shooting game. You may note that for Fortnite and Overwatch data is estimated as I cannot get any clear number from the respective authorities.
All other games’ player base is accurate and taken from the official Steam page. Each WASD shooting game’s respective player base is given in their details section separately in the post further below.
Fortnite Player Base (Estimated): 2,512,458
Since the battle royale category exploded last year with the rise of PUBG there is no scarcity of battle royale games. Yet even in the swiftly overcrowded genre, the Fortnite battle royale stands out thanks to its true-to-life colors and marvelous free-form building system that is disparate from anything else in competitive multiplayer gaming.
Fortnite battle royale premise couldn’t sound anymore like a standard battle royale game. You and 99 other people skydive onto an island fall of aimlessly, spawning loot in hopes of being the last player and team standing to keep things from getting dull.
Fortnite has three types of gaming modes i.e.
- Save the World
- Battle Royal
Apex Legends Player Base: 261,803
Since its surprise launch in 2019 Apex has grown and evolved in thrilling ways adding even more fresh ideas to a genre that very often feels derivative. Exceptional mobility, versatility, and class-based teamwork merged for an exciting and rewarding feeling you can’t get in any other battle royale.
Earnestly these fast-paced matches never fall to get my heart racing as I hop, slither, and dive bullets while hip firing a sniper rifle. While the battle royale structure here is well-known to its 16 playable characters call the legends that keep Apex from feeling run of the mill. Each legend possesses abilities strengths and playstyles as well as an enthralling back story belt of the Sci-Fi universe that the developer respawns created for its excellent Titanfall series.
Counter-Strike Global Offensive
Counter-Strike Player Base: 5,723,658
CS GO is more of an update than an honest to God sequel. Although it maintains much of what made the original Counter-Strike so tremendous as such the gameplay and near-perfect balancing make it completely enthralling.
It’s one of the great games in the multiplayer FPS genre in case you are one of the unfortunate few to have never experience the series Counter-Strike GO is an entirely multiplayer experience.
you can play it offline against AI bots, but it’s online where the thrills are. In the traditional game mode, there are two types of matches and two levels of competition rank level is the original old school style of counter strike with a scale-based ranking system used to balance teams and match players of equivalent skill.
PUBG Battleground Player Base: 1,762,465
This game wastes no time putting you right in the middle of the action as you and up to 99 other players parachute on of its sprawling maps. Part of the genius of all matches is how laboriously it weighs every move you make and it starts with the critical decision of where to land.
The moments after hitting the ground demands insane ramble for weaponry and gear as the assassination starts right from get-go backpacks for holding more pieces of equipment, protective gear, medical items, weapons, and a good mix of firearms in good supply.
Yet finding good loot is only half the battle the other half is as players outsmart each other in deadly games of cat and mouse experts or fortunate survivors are forced into closer proximity within that confines a deadly shrinking force field until just one player or team is left alive.
Half-Life 2 Player Base: 126,520
It is a stunning game it is probably the best first-person shooter single-player first-person shooter that I have ever played. While it doesn’t do anything particularly innovative it does do everything very well.
There’s a lot that’s impressive about the technology that’s running this game. The much much-publicized source engine that we have all been looking forward to seeing for quite a while now and I have seen in counter strike source but haven’t seen how well it would run using AI and that’s one of the most impressive things that it managers to run well. It does so without compromising you know the gameplay well once you get into the game you will be pretty impressed by what you see.
Call of Duty Series
Call of Duty Player Base: 104,512
The plot of the latest warfare starts out trying to blur the lines between good and bad but it ends up quickly establishing the good guys as very good. The U.S. team is guided by famous mustachioed fan-favored captain John Price.
While the sister and brother duo of Farah and Hamir head up as insurgency movement fighting to push Russian forces out of their fictional home country of urging stand. That’s right it’s cool to shoot at Russia again that’s not to say that uncomfortable morally great things don’t happen in this campaign. They do and sometimes those events are directly in your control unarmed women die children are shot suicide bombers are a threat but even modern warfare’s biggest moment is a showdown with a generical name.
Titanfall 2 Player Base: 84,453
It’s campaign is the tale of rifleman Cooper who is unanticipatedly given the reins of Vanguard-Class Titan BT-7274. When the two are stranded on the planet dialogical robot every man’s buddy comedy quips are fun if somewhat predictable but there is genuine mutual respect and caring between them.
You along with our Titan and some NPCs will always be in the front of the militia faction. You are given missions that you have to complete to proceed in the story further. Upgrade your titan suit by finding suitable attachments in the missions.
Although its single-player campaign is nice Titanfall 2 is really famous for its multiplayer battles. Apex legend is also based on the Totanfall 2’s environment.
Overwatch Player Base: 1,554,146
It is an unbelievable accomplishment in multiplayer shooter design and one that provides nearly endless opportunities for exhilarating coordinated play. When you are the one at the center of it feels like nothing else and even while it’s dramatically expanded its roster of distinctive characters and maps.
Since the release none of what made it truly special has changed it still sends around taking and controlling points on the map escorting play loads from one end to another. All of the expense of the enemy themes health bars it’s a simple setup and not an altogether original one but it’s the nuance found in how you go about winning each match that makes overwatch so brilliant.
Rainbow Six Siege
Rainbow Six Siege Player Base: 947,224
Siege has come a long way since it launched 2 years ago a steady stream of new maps and operators have slowly transformed it into a much deeper competitive game. Even if there are curling paths that come along with that it’s still a 5 Vs 5 dance of attack and defense.
The whole game is played on 15 compact but complex maps that stretch across multiple stories it’s littered with destructible walls and floors letting you make your dose and open up new site lines. Each round of a match starts with the frantic race as one side sets off their defenses and the other hands for Intel with remote-controlled drones.
There’s a fantastic amount of variety every time I sit down to play the flip side is that so many unique maps mean it takes longer to learn their layouts but it’s a trade-off that ultimately improves siege.
Thresh – The Man Who Made WASD as Gaming Standard
You will be shocked to know that WASD was not chosen by any gaming company as default buttons to play. Rather it was the influence of a single gamer who made this a common practice worldwide.
The man who made WASD popular is Denis Fong also known as Thresh. He can be also titled as the first professional gamer. Thresh was a gaming legend, he never lost a tournament of Quake (1996).
Let’s catch up with the story, if you want the WASD shooting games instead you can skip to the next heading.
Release of First 3D game – Quake (1996)
With the release of Quake in 1996 gaming world changed drastically. The quake was the first 3D game i.e. you have 3 types of movements up-down, forward-backward, and left-right.
But earlier there were only two movements that need to be controlled, and the release of Quake posed a new challenge in front of our gamers i.e. How to control new movements with old ones?
Many players tried different key combinations, some tried ASDF, some tried arrow keys, and so on. But none of the combinations were working as expected.
Earlier to the release of Quake players were mainly playing games through the keyboard, but after its release use of the mouse became necessary. Still, movement keys were not finalized and it proved very problematic to move and use crouch, jump, weapons changing, etc.
So our star player Thresh find the most simple solution i.e. WASD as movement keys and mouse for free look. These keys were near to the crouch, jump crawl, etc., and were easily controllable through the left hand, thus making the right hand free for the mouse.
He used this combination in many Quake tournaments and as he was the “king” of the tournament gamers across the world started copying him.
This became so common that now PC games have WASD as their default movement keys.
